1. Identification: Spondylus unicolor (Sowerby, 1847), Isla Turners, south off Isla Tiburón, Sea of Cortez, Mexico, on mixed gravel bottom in 14m depth, from private display of Virginia Upton, 1981, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: The type specimen of unicolor is still preserved and obviously a shell from the princeps complex, and it was observed that the locality as supplied to Sowerby was spurious. Personally I think using this name is useful to describe these shells which are in fact unicolor, that is solid saturated color as the Latin word implies, and also it is different in type of spines to anything you can find in the related princeps. So I hope you will allow me the liberty to call this shell unicolor and I was preceded by Ruth Purdy, the most famous California and Galapagos specialist of the 20th century, a remarkable lady and well known for the important donations to several public institutions, shells of course, and feral treasures as you all know. She was the first to become a specialist in deep water shells newly found in all the area of CA, Baja California and Galapagos. Her Trophon collection was overwhelming and her pieces from Catalina Island are still the most beautiful ever found. This magnificent Spondylus is one of her shells which later was owned by Virginia Upton, and I am happy to present it now to be passed on to a new generation of shell lovers.
